Mammals.

Erinaceus europaeus Hedgehog We are so pleased that these adorable little creatures are at Birley Spa. They are really struggling at the moment, hopefully they have a safe haven with us. As they are nocturnal the only images we have so far are this video, and as you can see the little beauty of 7000 spines can move at speed!

Sciurus carolinensis Grey Squirrel Introduced to this country in the 1800s and classed as an invasive species, legislation is possibly going to be brought in to make rescue of these clever little creatures illegal, which seems somewhat extreme for areas where the native Red Squirrel does not inhabit, such as Birley Spa or indeed anywhere in South Yorkshire.

Vulpes vulpes Fox. Weighing in at 5 to 8kg, these instantly recognisable animals are a modern day survivor. Readily adaptable to any environment, country or urban, these opportunists get to have the best of both worlds at the Spa! Although a common sight throughout the country, most foxes only have a life expectancy of around 3 years.
